Some PPP servers, particularly older ones, use acommand-line interface to authenticate and establishconnections. Most people use automated scripts to connect to them,but it is also possible to do so manually through a terminal window.If you are having trouble connecting, using a terminal window can helpyou determine what is going wrong.

Note: In general, it is not useful to use a terminalwindow if the PPP server you are connecting to does not include acommand-line interface. (The 856-520X pools at Indiana UniversityBloomington, for example, do not.)

To open a terminal window session with the Mac OS X Terminal application, follow the instructions below:

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences....
  2. In the System Preferences window, from theView menu, select Network.
  3. Next to 'Location:', select New Location....
  4. In the sheet that appears, type Terminal Dialin forthe new location, then click OK.
  5. Back in the Network preferences, from the 'Location:'menu, select Terminal Dialin.
  6. Click the PPP tab. If you don't see it, make sure thatyour modem is selected in the pull-down menu next to 'Show:'.
  7. Type the phone number of the PPP server, and your account name andpassword on that server, in the appropriate fields.
  8. Click the PPP Options... button.
  9. In the sheet that appears, click the box next to Connect usinga terminal window (command line) so that it is selected.
  10. Click OK, then Apply Now.
  11. Open the Internet Connect application. It is normally in theApplications folder.
  12. In the Internet Connect window, clickConnect.
